January 2007
Both noggins in November were very well attended despite the inclement weather. New member and Aero owner Emyr Davies from Pembrokeshire was in the area so made an appearance at Usk. The number of West Wales members is on the increase and it may well be that noggins in that area may start up again in the New Year.

On Saturday 11th Chris & Helen called in to whisk Dianne & myself off to Llangoed Hall for coffee and where Chris made the final arrangements for our weekend there in Early March. This looks like being a spectacular weekend so if you didn’t manage to book it you should keep in touch with Chris in case there are any cancellations.

The sun shines on the righteous, as it did on Taffmog for our November scenic run. Of course, Pontsticill has its own micro-climate and the weather there was so bad that Mal & Yvonne left home in the tin-top (an action they were to regret for the rest of the day) to meet up with George & Thelma, Humphrey & Caroline, Chris & Helen, Dave & Linda and Dianne & myself at the Honey Café for coffee. Then, who should turn up out of the blue (or rather the Rhondda) but Neil minus Helen. When everyone had been watered, and some fed, it was a hoods down run to Ludlow for the Mediaeval Christmas Fayre. Afterwards, we returned to Thruxton Farm for a home cooked dinner, where we met up with those professional dog-minders, Keith & Ronie, as well as Stuart & Jackie, Keith & Brenda, and poor old Mark & Isobel who had to turn up in the Landrover because of the persistent pinking of their Anniversary 4/4. Let’s hope the factory can sort it out once and for all! The raffle prize was kindly donated by Humphrey & Caroline and unashamedly won by the dog-minders.

Congratulations to John from everyone at Taffmog for his success in winning his class in the finals of the Auto Glym Open Concours series at Gaydon on 25th and 26th of November. Where does he go from here?

Please do your utmost to attend the January noggin at the Barn for the AGM and planning meeting. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work in making this last year such a busy and successful one. Looking forward to another enjoyable year to come. Happy New Year to one and all!

February 2007
The Taffmog Christmas Weekend was yet another resounding success, with many people suggesting that we return to the Royal Hotel at Ross-on-Wye in the future. The quality of the rooms, the service and the friendly helpfulness of the staff was a big factor in this.

Twenty three couples arrived on the Friday, with sixteen of us heading to China Boy Joe’s for a Chinese banquet. The restaurant didn’t seem to have catered for that sized party before because, although the food was tasty, there wasn’t enough of it to sate the voracious appetites of some of the Taffmoggers present. We were also surprised to find that the “inclusive” price did not include water. Minor problems aside the evening went well with a stroll back to the hotel for drinks in the bar.

The weather on the Saturday was perfect for the scenic run through many picturesque Cotswold villages on the way to Bourton on the Water where most of us spent a nostalgic couple of hours in the Cotswold Motor and Toy Museum. It was then a swift run back to the hotel for the traditional mince-pie reception – more than enough of the home-baked mince pies to go round the full complement of thirty six couples! Denis had no need to worry that there’d be none left by the time he and Liz arrived.

Everyone (who attended!!!) enjoyed the evening meal. One couple (not Taffmoggers by the way) caused much concern by not turning up until the evening was almost at an end. Fortunately they were safe, if not sound!

Prior to the raffle, Val Harris suggested that a collection be made for the unfortunate Thom Donaldson. This was put to the members and it was unanimously decided to contribute all profits from the raffle to this appeal. The sale of raffle tickets was brisk and Vickie & Colin, who won the first prize, insisted that it be auctioned with the money going to the appeal. John & Avril put in the highest bid, raising a further £90 and with a donation of £78 from Dave & Julia Harrison this increased the overall profit to a whisker under £500. Thank you, Jackie and Kevin for organising the raffle and selling the tickets. Thanks also to Chris, who organised the slide show, which was, as usual, full of embarrassing moments captured for posterity. You never know who’s watching you with their camera at the ready!

Apparently there was a tremendous storm during the night and this resulted in cancellation of the Christmas Fayre at Eastnor Castle which was our destination for the Sunday morning. Refunds should be with you by the time you read this, (apart from Bill & Angie who contributed theirs to the appeal). Ad hoc arrangements were made by individuals but we all met back at the Royal for lunch before saying our goodbyes and heading for home.

Thanks to Keith & Brenda for all their hard work in arranging the whole weekend.

As usual there was a good turnout for the noggin at John & Avril’s with Avril’s catering up to the usual excellent standard. Thank you both for putting up with us yet again.

There was a good crowd at the Con Club in Usk for the Christmas dinner, with George & Thelma turning up in the new Aston Martin. Pity it was too dark in the car park to get a really good look at it but I’m sure we all will in due course.

Lyn has secured 10 rooms at the Ty Newydd Hotel for a meal and “Rat Pack” evening on Saturday, Feb 3rd. He will need to know who wishes to come along ASAP.

March 2007
37 members attended the AGM in January but no-one felt sufficiently motivated to volunteer or nominate anyone else for either position of secretary or treasurer. The incumbents were voted in again. Now there’s a surprise.

All comments received regarding the updating of our constitution are in favour of retaining the Taffmog Constitution as it stands. Anyone requiring a copy of this please let me know. Also, there have been no amendments requested to the draft minutes of the AGM.

Fortunately, after a few beverages, members were more inclined to offer to arrange events throughout the year and the programme for 2007 is now complete. Please let me know if you haven’t received a copy of this by e-mail or post.

The Usk noggin was also well attended with members anticipating a visit from Peter Constable, representing Newtown Motors the new Morgan dealers in South Wales. Just as well there was plenty to chat about, because he didn’t turn up. Not a good start to their relationship with Taffmog. However, he has apologised and explained the circumstances leading to his non-appearance. He is determined to attend both the main and Usk noggins in the near future, hopefully bringing along an Aero or a new 4-seater for us all to play with. Newtown motors will be holding an evening launch party to which all Taffmoggers are invited and details will be with you as soon as they are in place.

9 couples have taken advantage of Lyn & Elaine’s organisation of the Rat Pack event at the Ty Newydd Country Hotel and Graham & Joan advise me that bookings are proceeding well for their West Wales Weekend at the end of March.

Several of us are looking forward to our “Posh weekend” at Llangoed Hall at the beginning of March, organised by Chris & Helen. Knowing that many people were disappointed in not being able to attend this year, Chris has provisionally reserved all the rooms for next year so please contact him asap if you’re interested.

Keith & Brenda were absolutely thrilled to discover, on their return from Hong Kong, that they’d been allocated the plum job of arranging the “Longest Day” Weekend (can I say that?). You should have received details by the time you read this. If not, get in touch.

Chris & Helen, Gary & Kath together with Humphrey & Caroline joined Bill & Angie in donating their Eastnor Castle refunds to the Thom Donaldson Appeal. Sarah Baldwin, on behalf of the Appeal, has written to me in appreciation of Taffmog’s final donation of £532.95

Don’t forget that main noggins during the Summer months will be at different locations, organised by volunteers. The first of these will be the 12th April noggin which is being organised by Neil & Helen. Details to follow.

Please note that we have some wonderful Taffmog key fobs for sale, available in 4 different colours, ivory, blue, green and red. Cost is £5 + postage. Car badges at £30 + postage are also available, but in red only. Contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of these items.

April 2007
Lyn & Elaine’s “Rat Pack” event started with 7 Mogs (Lyn & Elaine, Keith & Ronie, Kevin & Helen, Dave & Linda, Neil & Helen, Humphrey & Caroline and honorary Taffmoggers John & Margaret) meeting at Asda’s car park, Coryton to set off on the first leg of their scenic run. This was to take them to a coffee stop at the famous and most interesting Llancaiach Fawr Manor House in Nelson. Unfortunately, Humphrey & Caroline’s +8 developed a problem and they were forced to have the car, and themselves relayed all the way home to Rhossili so that they could pick up the tin top and meet everyone for the evening entertainment. Dave & Kay who are supporting each other on their self-inflicted diets (can you believe that?)  together with Dianne & myself (who really should be on diets!)  met up with the party at the Abercrave Inn for lunch. The scenic run from here to the hotel was rather brisk, so that Lyn could watch the rugby. The entertainment that evening was a great success and it was amusing to see that both “Frank” and “Deano” took a great shine to Margaret. After breakfast the following morning, five couples took advantage of the unexpected sunshine to enjoy a run over the Brecon Beacons for a coffee at Trecastle before heading home. Thank you Lyn & Elaine for once again organising a most enjoyable weekend.

The “main” noggin at the Barn was not well attended due to snow but the inclement weather didn’t put off Peter Constable from Newtown Motors (Wales’ only Morgan dealers)  who turned up to his first noggin in a 4 x 4. Thanks to Kevin for taking the reins at this meeting, since Dianne and I were snowbound in Brecon. Newtown Motors invited us to hold our March noggin at their showroom since it coincided with their launch party and this was accepted.

The snow cleared in plenty of time for the East Wales noggin at Usk which, in contrast, had the highest turnout of Taffmoggers ever (27 in all). These 3rd Wednesdays of the month are becoming ever more popular.

There has been a change to the April and May noggins. The main noggin on April 12th is now being arranged by Dianne. It will be at The White Hart in Machen, situated on the A468 between Caerphilly and Newport. An extensive range of bar meals is available. You should have received full details by now – if not and you intend coming along please give us a ring.

Don’t forget that we will be defending our title of ‘Best Club Stand’ at the Pencoed Classic Car Show on May 6th so we are hoping for a good display of cars again this year. I’m sure you will all do your best to attend.

Finally, congratulations from all at Taffmog to birthday boy Mr Geoffrey Tipler on achieving the ripe old age of 60, or so we believe! You would have a free bus pass if you’d stayed in Wales.

May 2007
The first weekend in March saw 9 Taffmog couples together with Sally’s sister and her husband meeting up at Llangoed Hall for Chris & Helen’s posh weekend. Once settled in to the sumptuous rooms a taxi shuttle service whisked us off to the Griffin at Llyswen for the evening. The clay pigeon shooting on Saturday was cancelled, due to unforeseen circumstances, necessitating a change of plan. Chris & Helen made their way to Hay-on Wye then went looking for houses. Denis & Liz took advantage of the situation and slothed about all morning before also venturing as far as Hay-on-Wye. Martin & Sally, together with their guests Jane (Sally’s sister) & Derek went for a walk in the grounds or rather the quagmire. Dave & Kay had previously arranged to go on a run, ending with tea at Mair Evans’ in Llanidloes. What a surprise for Mair when they turned up with George & Thelma, Neil & Helen, Humphrey & Caroline, Keith & Brenda and Dianne & myself in tow (not literally, of course). Mair was thrilled, not least because it allowed her to dispose of the remains of her Christmas cake. Saturday evening was the “black tie” dinner in the orangery where we remained for the rest of the evening. Everyone enjoyed the weekend and Chris has reserved 17 of the 23 rooms for 7th and 8th March next year for a repeat performance. Many thanks to Chris & Helen for all the arrangements.

The main noggin in March was hosted by Newtown Motors, the new and only Morgan dealership in Wales. There was an excellent turnout of Taffmoggers, evident from the number of Morgans in the car park, and most of them paid almost as much interest to the cars on display as to the buffet. Dixon Smith and Matthew Parkin were also in attendance. Thanks to Barry & Glyn Davies and Peter Constable for their hospitality. No doubt we’ll be seeing a lot more of them in the future.

At the MSCC AGM and Dinner/Dance, Taffmog was represented by Chris & Helen, John & Avril, stalwarts Brian & Mollie, Neil & Helen, Dianne & myself and John & Margaret. Lead being in his pipes rather than in his pencil meant that Mike & Enid were exiled with another centre. It was an honour to be welcomed along with members from Japan, USA and mainland Europe as visitors from abroad. That honour could have been extended further of course, by announcing the result of the Wales v England match in Cardiff. However, we understand! Everyone enjoyed the weekend and a big thank you goes to Mary Oliver for all her hard work in the organisation yet again.

The West Wales weekend was a resounding success again this year, with the organisation being taken over by Graham & Joan Stephens.
Twelve couples converged on the Beggars Reach Hotel on the Friday night and were joined by “locals” Graham & Joan, Andrew & Helen Blissett in their new +4 and Emyr & Janet Davies in their Aero, as well as proud Grand pappy Bill with son-in law in tow for a convivial evening.
Saturday morning saw Dave & Kay up early for breakfast – now there’s an event. Ivor and Alison joined the throng, proud grandmother Angie was in her rightful place beside Bill and after a short photo-shoot we were off to the Cwm Deri Vineyard for coffee and cake and to sample their wines and liqueurs. Chateau-neuf et al needn’t worry!
A short run took us to the lunch stop, after which it was the St. Brides Bay coast road to Graham & Joan’s beautifully positioned house at Llangwm Ferry for the traditional West Wales cream tea. The weather was superb and most of us enjoyed the refreshments on the patio while being captivated by the views of the estuary.
We returned to The Beggars Reach without Neil & Helen who virtually drove home to attend Max Boyce’s wife’s birthday party. However they returned by about 1.30a.m. and appeared quite refreshed at breakfast.
The early Sunday morning start wasn’t – probably due to the indulgences of the previous night but finally, a scenic run via St. David’s took us to a coffee stop at Porthgain, where we were joined for the day by Colin & Vicky. From here it was a run over the Preselis for a late lunch at Whitland before heading for home.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and a big “thank you” goes to Graham & Joan for all the time and effort spent in organising one of the highlights of the Taffmog Calendar.

Don’t forget that the main noggin in May will be at The Angel, Glyn Neath. Contact Neil or Helen (01443 755354) for details. The May run is a week early (20th)!!

June 2007
Our itinerant Summer main noggins started with a very good turnout at the White Hart in Machen, with many members taking advantage of the good weather and arriving in their Mogs. We welcomed new member Carl Hadley to his first noggin, unfortunately minus his wife Jean, who was too ill to attend. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her soon. Vince & Christine turned up, with daughter Holly, who was invited to draw the winning raffle ticket. Needless to say, she pulled out her father’s number and so had good cause to lay claim to most of the box of chocolates! The noggin at Usk was also well attended, although we missed Stuart & Jackie, who had just left for their 7 week European jaunt and Rob & Kay, who had been to the seaside with their buckets and spades.

A small group of Taffmoggers, led by Neil & Helen, enjoyed a foray in the Scottish Highlands over the Easter week-end. The laird of Duart Castle took a particular fancy to the cars (or was it Margaret?) and invited the group to afternoon tea!

On Sunday 22nd, Martin & Sally, John & Margaret and Dianne & I represented Taffmog at Geoff Tipler’s surprise 60th birthday party. Suffice it to say, he hasn’t changed since moving from Wales – apart from showing some latent hippie tendencies with long hair. The afternoon was enjoyed by all. John & Margaret had an eventful run home with a blow-out at 70mph. Fortunately, no damage to car or occupants but John was distraught at the loss of a tyre that he’d become very attached to. It had been on the car since Adam was a boy!

The last Sunday of the month dawned bright and sunny and saw 19 Mogs converging at Garwnant Forest Centre in the Brecon Beacons for Yvonne and Mal’s debut run. We were pleased to see new members Carl & Jean Hadley in their new Roadster, Des & Nona Watkins in their new Aero, and Ian and Helen Fidoe with daughter Alexandra in their 4/4 4 seater. Our observational skills were put to the test as we drove through the beautiful Mid-Wales countryside, as Mal & Yvonne had prepared a questionnaire relating to the run. Our lunch stop was at the Elan Valley Visitors’ centre and while negotiating the narrow roads, we passed three Mogs travelling in the opposite direction. It turned out that they were a group from Sweden, who had hired the cars for a holiday in Wales. They were invited to turn around and join us for lunch, but as they had just left the Visitors’ Centre, they declined. After a picnic lunch, the run continued through Mid-Wales, and ended at Dolygaer, where Yvonne & Mal had prepared a curry meal for everyone. Thank you both for a really enjoyable day.

The June noggin will be held at Chris & Helen’s home in Treoes, near Bridgend, where they are planning a balmy evening of wine, bread and cheese (if the weather is nice).  Directions will be available if members contact him on 01656 650524.

July 2007
We had an excellent turnout for the Pencoed Classic Car Show on the 6th with 19 Morgans on the stand.  New member Tony Abbott and his son Adrian were there very early to help Kevin and Gareth with the gazebo. Carl tried his best to set up a video display but the lap-top wouldn’t recognise Kevin’s files. Who can blame it? West Wales was well represented with Andrew & Helen in their new +4 and Bill & Angie and Emyr & Janet in their Aeros. If Denis hadn’t been too busy playing with his train set we’d have had a hat trick. I am completely unbiased when I say that the Morgan stand was by far the best in show, but the 1st prize was stolen by the Jaguar crowd – could the fact that the chief judge is a Jaguar man have any bearing on this? Of course not!!!!   The BBQ at Kev & Helen’s after the show, was up to the usual great standard and the weather just about stayed fine for the duration. Thanks to Kevin & Helen for all their efforts in making the day such a pleasure.

There was a good turnout for Neil & Helen’s noggin at The Angel although the appalling weather resulted in there being only 1 Morgan in the car park. Well done Carl & Jean. The food was excellent as was the service and, of course, the company. Thanks to Neil & Helen for the organisation.

There was a dramatic change in the weather for Humphrey & Caroline’s Gower run on the 20th. After a couple of weeks of continuous rain, the day dawned bright and sunny – perfect Morganeering weather. By 10.15, no fewer than 18 Morgans graced Sainsbury’s car park in Swansea, ready for the off at 10.30. Both Kay & Dave’s brand new Roadster and our nearly new Roadster caused a great deal of interest in the car park before we left. We managed to steer our way through the traffic congestion caused by a fun run being held in the city centre that morning and were soon cruising Gower’s country lanes. After an enjoyable coffee stop we continued on our way, glimpsing stunning coastal views both to the left and right as we weaved our way across the peninsula before coming to a halt at Mumbles, for a visit to the Coastguard Station, where we were joined by John & Avril. Despite the good weather and the inevitable increase in pleasure craft and coastal walkers that this sort of weather brings, the station was quiet and so the officers were able to spare us some of their valuable time to describe the work that they do.

The remainder of the afternoon was again spent meandering the country lanes of the Gower Peninsula before ending the run at Humphrey and Caroline’s home, situated in a stunning position on the headland overlooking Rhosili Bay. We were joined here by Mark & Isobel, who were holidaying in the area (their attendance for the food and not the run was duly noted). Humphrey & Caroline had prepared a magnificent hot and cold buffet, with their furniture relegated to the garage and tables to seat 40+ people laid out in their living room to take advantage of the panoramic views. Taffmog’s reputation for enjoying their food was again upheld as everyone tucked in to no less than a sumptuous banquet. Thank you both for all your hard work in organising the run and providing such a memorable meal. Thanks also to your neighbours who helped you.

Taffmoggers will be pleased to hear that, in support of the Club, Newtown Motors in Cwmbran are offering a 10% discount on the servicing of their Mogs and their tin tops. More details of this scheme will be available soon.

The July noggin is being organised by Martin & Sally and is being held at The Clytha Arms, which is situated on the B4598, the old Abergavenny/Raglan road. For more details, ring Martin & Sally on 01291 691007.

By the time you read this, I should have received all deposits and booking forms for the Taffmog Winter Weekend based at Gwbert on Sea. If not …..!

August 2007
The beginning of June saw five intrepid Taffmog cars heading for Davos in Switzerland for the Austrian and Swiss joint 60th anniversary celebrations. We had a superb time traversing all those mountain passes and cars and occupants behaved impeccably.

Thanks to Chris & Helen for hosting the June noggin at their home in Treoes, near Bridgend with a cheese and wine evening. Attendance wasn’t as good as it has been of late, but nevertheless about 20 Taffmoggers enjoyed Chris & Helen’s hospitality. Kevin reported that Annie Knight (who regularly attends our Christmas weekend with husband Don) has not been well of late. Everyone in Taffmog wishes her the very best.

The Usk noggin was, as usual, well attended with Stuart & Jackie newly returned from their European jaunt and Dave & Kay, Rob & Kay, George, Dianne and myself full of stories of our Swiss adventures.

Five couples, (Keith & Brenda, Chris & Helen, Neil & Helen, Humphrey & Caroline and Mark & Isobel) met for dinner on the Friday evening at the Old Court Hotel in Symonds Yat at the start of Keith & Brenda’s Longest Day weekend. A further 7 couples (Dave & Kay, Martin & Sally, Dave & Linda, Graham & Joan, honorary Taffmoggers Mike & Enid, Spotmoggers Neil & Gill and Dianne and I) met up with them for coffee the following morning at Mortimer’s Cross for the short drive to Shobdon for their Food and Flower festival. The weather was kind to us and we had a leisurely afternoon strolling around the stalls, sampling the food and wine and enjoying the brass band and Morris dancers. The cars were then loaded with goodies for our drive back to the hotel. There was just time for a quick pint in the bar before a short walk to the 13th century church of St. Dubricus, where we set off for a cruise on the River Wye. Dinner that evening was held in the splendid setting of the hotel’s former Great Hall.

Sunday dawned rather wet and miserable and we were joined by a further three cars – Tony, Pam and Adrian were frightened by the weather and turned up in their tin top, but Colin & Vicky and Tom & Jackie arrived in their Mogs. The Fidoes were even more put off by the weather and cried off. We all set off with hoods up, apart from Dave & Kay, who must have had a direct line, because within half an hour of leaving, the clouds lifted and the weather was good for the rest of the day. Keith & Brenda had prepared detailed route plans of our journey; unfortunately, most were too bleary eyed to follow the directions and ended up on the motorway, instead of the much more scenic route that the rest of us followed, ending at the Black Country Museum at Dudley. We enjoyed our visit to the drift mine and the old school-room, where the naughty children amongst us (Neil, Keith, Tom, Colin, Brenda and Caroline) suffered the wrath of the formidable headmistress. The highlight of the visit for most, if not all of us, however, was the delicious traditional fish and chip lunch (cooked in beef dripping) – not good for the cholesterol but fantastic none the less! Thanks to Keith & Brenda for all their hard work in organising another successful weekend (that will teach you both to turn up at the AGM and planning meeting in future).

There is no main noggin in August, because most people seem to be away on holidays, and it’s close to MOG07 at Goodwood. However, there will be a noggin at the Conservative Club in Usk on Wednesday 15th. Main noggins should resume at The Barn, Mwyndu in September.

For those wishing to attend the Pembroke County Run on September 2nd (approx. 85 miles around the spectacular Pembrokeshire countryside from Milford to Tenby) and needing somewhere to stay, rooms are available at the Beggar’s Reach (where we stayed for Graham & Joan’s West Wales weekend). There are 5 rooms available for Friday & Saturday night B & B at £130 or 12 rooms available for Saturday only at £75. Please contact the hotel direct on 01646 600700 or email: stay@beggars-reach.com If you wish to attend but haven’t completed an entry form, they are available from 01646 697226 or email: pembscountyrun@aol.com

Similarly, if you haven’t yet entered for the Tredegar House Vintage and Specialist Rally in aid of Leukaemia Research on September 16th, you need to do so by September 10th – a late entry charge of £10 (to Leukaemia Research) is now payable. Forms are available from 01633 891262 or 01633 895145.

Finally, congratulations to Paul Harris from everyone in the South Wales Centre on his appointment as MSCC’s Overseas Liaison Officer. We’re sure he’ll do a grand job and wish him every success.

September 2007
The last of our itinerant Summer noggins was held at the Clytha Arms near Raglan, thanks to Martin & Sally. It was extremely well attended and we were pleased to welcome Geoff & Jenny once more into our midst for the evening; well, Jenny anyway! These noggins have proved very popular with members intimating that they’ve enjoyed the different venues and appreciated that they are fairer for the individuals that have to travel the greater distances month after month.

Five couples, intrepid Puckers all, were booked in to Dodwell Park campsite just outside Stratford for the weekend of Friday 13th; however, only four couples made it , as Dianne and I had to cancel due to illness. Keith & Ronnie, Lyn & Elaine, Stuart & Jackie and Kevin & Helen arrived safely, and, by the time everything was set up, Jackie was ready with one of her superb chilli con carnes. Eight full-sized people crammed into a little awning designed for two – very cosy! On the Saturday they made a trip to the Coventry transport museum, well worth a look. They pulled up outside to be welcomed by one of the curators who very kindly allowed them into the secure parking area. The staff were really pleasant and couldn’t do enough to help. The museum houses Thrust 2 and Thrust SST, the sound barrier car. You can even experience the record breaking ride in the sound barrier simulator. Overall, an excellent museum.  An unusual (for this year anyway) wonderfully warm evening enabled the BBQ to continue until 11.30pm and presented Stuart with a spectacular sunset to photograph.

Sunday it rained (surprise, surprise!), so it was a trip just down the road to ?Anne Hathaway’s cottage and afterwards an excellent pub lunch. Stuart & Jackie decided to stay for a couple of extra nights and Keith & Ronnie were going to ?visit their daughter, so the other two cars returned home. It turned out to be a really pleasant weekend. Those people with tents/caravans obviously missed a good one.  All the campers agreed that they would stay at this site again particularly as the proprietor was such a pleasant fella. Who else would come over and tell you that you were the only person allowed to speed on his campsite ...because he loved the sound of the V8 engine? What a man!

Saturday 28th July saw Newtown Motors in Cwmbran holding a trial drive day when members were invited along to try out the new Aero and +4. Who knows? As a result of this, we may see a few more new cars in the club.

Kev & Helen’s picnic run on the 29th had to be cancelled due to the route being through some of the flooded areas of Gloucestershire – such a pity after all the planning. However, I’m sure we’ll use the route some time in the future.

John & Glenda are looking forward to taking delivery of their new +4 at the beginning of September and have already planned their run for the end of the month. Please meet at McDonalds’ car park on the A465, just off junction 43 of the M4, to leave by 10.00 a.m. Latecomers and east-Walians may prefer to join at the coffee stop, which will be at the Honey Café on the A438 at Bronllys, leaving here at 11.30 a.m. Stout shoes and National Trust cards are needed for the visit to a place of interest.

October 2007
August 5th saw a large number of Taffmoggers converge on Stuart & Jackie’s to celebrate Jackie’s **th birthday. Slaving over the BBQ and the hours of preparation necessary to sate the appetites of those present proved no problem for Jackie, who was the perfect hostess. The occasion was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. There was plenty of food to go round – apart from the TRIFLE!  It can only be assumed that some people had more than their fair share, meaning that Jackie had to prepare another one for the following weekend at Goodwood – and lovely it was, too!

Goodwood certainly lived up to its glorious name. Taffmog was well represented and thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. Congratulations and a big thank you to Mike Elliott, his committee and everyone who helped in the organisation and running of an excellent weekend.

There was no noggin on the customary 2nd Thursday of the month, however a few stalwarts turned up at Usk the following Wednesday. FEW being the operative word!!

Dave, our extra-special correspondent, reports on the antics of a small group of Taffmoggers –
The weather forecast for the August Bank Holiday weekend promised a bright and sunny weekend for Wales, making a welcome change to what seems to have been the wettest summer in many years.  Spirits lifted like the clouds during the Friday afternoon as five Morgan crews made their way to the Tyn y Cornell Hotel on the bank of Tal-y-Llyn lake in the Snowdonia National Park.  What a setting, the water’s edge almost lapping at the hotel door, and across the lake Cader Idris rising in magnificent splendour.  Colin & Vicki, and Ivor & Alison were first to arrive, followed by Dave & Kay, John & Margaret and Neil & Helen. All remarked on the stunning location and the high standard of the rooms, Neil and Helen managing yet again to choose a quality venue for us all to enjoy.  We all knew we were in good company when we clocked a Ferrari 360 Spider in the hotel carpark.

Early Saturday morning, before most people are awake let alone up, the roar of the Ferrari pulling away from the hotel was like an alarm clock. Kay however, obviously not easily impressed, thought it was just a cow bellowing across the field.  After breakfast, we all left for a run with a much quieter departure.  Knowing that this was Neil and Helen’s weekend, we all expected the run to be a decent length, and were not disappointed.  Almost 200 miles across, up and down the Snowdonia National Park taking in the wonderful scenery, over roads that the majority of the Bank Holiday tourists didn’t know existed.  Our first coffee stop was a small tearoom overlooking the beautiful Lake Vyrnwy.  With the sun shining brightly and glistening in the lake below, John remarked he was in heaven and could stay all day.  Ivor agreed, having just tried the chocolate cake off the menu.  But there’s not too much resting on a run of Neil’s.  North from here to Llandudno and a trip around the Great Orme, then back down the other side of the Conwy to Betws y Coed and on to Bethesda.  From here, we looped back along Llanberis Pass then down the west side of the Park, through Beddgelert, Trawsfynydd and back to the hotel on Tal y Llyn.  This last leg was cut short from the intended route so we could get back to the hotel before dark.  Meanwhile, our numbers at the hotel had grown as Humphrey & Caroline and Geoff & Jenny enjoyed a peaceful afternoon prior to our return.  Dennis & Liz also joined us shortly after our return, making a full house of eight Morgans for the weekend.  This made for another pleasant evening’s dining at the hotel in jovial company.

After a hearty Sunday breakfast, all 8 Mogs set off heading East on another great run that took us near to Oswestry then up to Llangollen, over the Horseshoe Pass and on to Ruthin, Denbigh and to lunch beside Llyn Brenig.  Once again most of the roads were devoid of Bank Holiday traffic, though we did exchange enthusiastic waves with a small charismatic convoy of Austin 7s we met en-route, the occupants looking somewhat eccentric and as though they’d had the cars from new.  That makes me wonder what tin-top drivers must think of us when they see a similar line of Morgans.  Following lunch, we continued South and West to Ffestiniog before re-joining the A470 for a while, leading to a short coastal excursion around Barmouth and Tywyn before heading back to the hotel for dinner.  A shorter run today of just 170 miles or so, providing the chance of a drink in the sun-shine before a quick pre-dinner shower.  Once again we enjoyed the fruits from the hotel kitchen in pleasant company with plenty of light-hearted banter across the dining table.
The following day, Colin and Neil were up very early to catch the 360 driver who they’d been talking to the previous evening.  It seems that his early morning jaunts are designed to take advantage of the empty mountain roads, giving him a chance to enjoy the 360 in the way Enzo intended and he had very generously offered them both a drive.  Rumour has that Neil was so excited that he didn’t actually go to bed, but just sat fully clothed waiting for the sun to come up.  When he looked out of the bedroom window and saw Colin apparently stealing a march and striding across the car park, he was after him like a whippet on a hare. They both had a great start to their day, and he even left them to go out together while he waited (and hoped) for them to come back with the car in one piece.  Colin later ‘phoned son Richard to tell him of his drive: “… even better than sex ...” he advised.

We left the hotel Monday morning and headed along the coast road from Tywyn down to Aberdyfi, then cut inland to Machynlleth.  By now we had already lost Geoff & Jenny as they made a break for home.  More mountain roads from there down to Llanidloes where we left Dennis & Liz to make their way home.  After a lunch stop at Llanwrtyd Wells we said goodbye to Ivor & Alison. Continuing South, John & Margaret departed for home just after the Storey Arms, while those of us without homes to go to headed down to Maerdy for a farewell cup of tea at Neil and Helen’s impressive and tasteful new home.

Once again Neil and Helen have provided us with a great North Wales experience and a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.  Thanks to them for the work they put into organising the runs and accommodation, and to all participants for their valued company.  We’re already looking forward to next year’s.

Members of Taffmog were deeply saddened to hear that Annie Knight had passed away. Annie, together with husband Don, the original “Duckmoggers” have been regular attendees of our Winter Weekend for the best part of 20 years. Annie always looked forward to this event, saying that it marked the beginning of their Christmas celebrations. A quiet and unassuming lady, Annie will be missed by the many friends she made in South Wales. Our thoughts and condolences are with Don at this time.

November 2007
The 10th Annual Pembrokeshire County Run on 2nd September attracted about 500 entries, Morgans being well represented with 14 cars from our centre. Some of us decided to make a weekend of it and booked into the Beggar’s Reach at Burton, near Milford Haven. Unfortunately, they were unable to feed us in the evenings due to wedding bookings, so on the Friday we went to the pub in the neighbouring village and enjoyed an excellent meal.

On the Saturday, we meandered around the pleasant Pembrokeshire countryside, stopping for lunch at the Tafarn Sinc in Rosebush. ‘Da iawn’ to all those who ordered their lunch in Welsh. On departing, Humphrey gave a farewell hoot on his klaxon and inadvertently started the egg and spoon race at the village fete, which was being held in the field adjoining the pub! Saturday evening, Graham and Joan hosted a BBQ in the garden of their home at Llangwm Ferry. This is in a beautiful setting with stunning views over the estuary. Everyone had a fantastic time and we are extremely grateful to Graham & Joan for all their hard work.

We were up bright and early on Sunday for the short drive to Milford Haven Marina, which was the starting point for the run. The 85 mile route took us from here to Tenby via Haverfordwest, St. David’s, Fishguard, Eglwyswrw and Narberth. We enjoyed breathtaking views of the north Pembrokeshire coastline and the Presceli Hills and were fortunate that the weather stayed fine. The route was lined with well wishers in every town and village who waved enthusiastically at all the cars and added a festive air to the occasion. I’m sure that this run will become a permanent fixture in the Taffmog calendar in future years.

The following weekend a group of us travelled to the Lake District for the annual Windermere Weekend. Although the format and venue were changed this year, it was still a resounding success and enjoyed by all who attended. Many thanks to Andrew, Sara, Bob and Sam for all their hard work in organising the event. We’ll be back next year and have already booked the hotel!

The noggin at The Barn, Mwyndu was well attended and the new manager made us very welcome, with the tables being laid for eating in the mezzanine. We welcomed Ian and Helen Fidoe to their first noggin (although they have already attended some of our runs) and also welcomed Paul and Lesley Harris back to the fold after their sojourn in Holland.

September is a busy month for Taffmoggers and the third weekend of the month was the annual Tredegar House Leukaemia Research event. I don’t know why more Taffmoggers don’t participate in the Saturday Classic Car Run as, yet again, it was superb. Dianne & I were the only members who took part and we thoroughly enjoyed the route, which this year took us through 120 miles of contrasting South Wales scenery, before returning to Tredegar House for a very enjoyable cream tea.

The Taffmog stand at the Vintage and Classic Car Rally on the Sunday saw a good turn out of cars, despite some members being away on holidays. As usual, we were treated to another of Jackie’s delicious BBQ’s after the event. Many thanks, Stuart & Jackie, for your hospitality yet again.

The noggin at the Conservative Club, Usk was also very well attended and here we welcomed new members John & Maggie who have recently moved to the area from Lincolnshire. We look forward to their company at future Taffmog events.

This report has been submitted earlier than usual because we will be on our way to Spain with Dave & Kay and Keith & Brenda at the end of the month. So the report on John & Glenda’s ‘New Car’ run, which will have taken place on September 30th, will appear next month.

There is no run at the end of November as you will all be busy girding your loins and making preparations for the event of the year – the annual Taffmog Winter Weekend, which this year is being held at the Cliff Hotel in Gwbert on Sea, near Cardigan. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Finally, a personal Thank You to Mark Baldwin for his courtesy and professionalism in sorting out a problem with our Roadster which would otherwise have put a blight on the Spanish trip.

December 2007
John needn’t have worried about his “New Car Run” on 30th Sept. John & Glenda led a small convoy from MacDonalds car park, J43 of the M4 and proceeded over the Brecon Beacons to The Honey Café at Bronllys where the majority of the group was waiting. After coffee and the obligatory cakes the twelve cars made their way through pleasant scenery to Pumsaint, Llanwrda and the Dolaucothi gold mines. Most of the party went on the Victorian mine visit while some wandered about the surface exhibits. There was then a short run to Talley for lunch at the Edwinsford Arms. After lunch there was a visit to Talley Abbey and the lake before the group dispersed and headed for home, all having thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thanks to John & Glenda for organising the day – sorry we couldn’t make it.

While that was going on, Dave & Kay, Keith & Brenda and Dianne & I were heading for Plymouth and the ferry to Santander. The crossing was calm but eventful as we pulled in to port – while I was on the bed with Brenda, everything was fine, but when Kay joined us – WOW! The earth may not have moved, but the bed did. With bolts springing from the wall the bed collapsed, pinning me underneath it and wiping the smile off my face instantly. Fortunately, Brenda and Kay escaped injury. I was less fortunate but the stewardess and doctor in attendance were sympathetic to my cause.

We were off to Dave’s sister’s villa in Moraira and the journey down was delightful – until we hit an unmetalled road with no signs. Unperturbed, we carried on for an hour until we found ourselves further back than when we started. It was the main road thereafter. While at the villa, the weather was superb and we enjoyed several runs into the mountains. A minor disaster occurred on one occasion when Dave couldn’t get the Roadster’s ignition to switch on. After much huffing and puffing and slight fraying of edges, it was discovered that the transponder had fallen out of the key. Where was it? The spare keys were in Monmouth. It was a Friday afternoon so pointless trying to phone the factory for advice. Eventually, it was found so we had another happy ending, knowing that the immobiliser works. Moral – carry a spare key, oh! and make sure the transponder is secure.

One day, we met up with Heiner Blume who we’d got to know on the Swiss/Austrian trip back in June. He arranged for us to meet at his friend Jan’s hotel, the Marisol Park at Calpe, where a magnificent breakfast was provided. Jan is also a Morgan owner and the group really enjoyed the run that day. Afterwards, it was back to Heiner’s home where Gisella, his wife, had been baking. Needless to say, as Taffmoggers we got stuck into the apple cake and fresh cream sponge. Considering that we’d only met Heiner and Gisella briefly, the reception and welcome we had was excellent and epitomises what ownership of a Morgan can mean.

After our stay at the villa, we headed north to Laguardia where we met up with Colin & Vickie, Carl & Jean, Dave & Linda, Stuart & Jackie and George for five days in the Rioja region. The weather continued to be kind to us, perfect for Morganeering with hoods down and for some hardy souls, side screens off. On the Friday we all, apart from Colin and Vicky (who decided to explore the local area) headed for the hills, where we enjoyed some magical scenery and a great welcome from the locals whenever we stopped. Towards the end of the afternoon we decided to follow a circular mountain route from the small town of Ezcaray. We climbed to over 6,000 feet and parked the cars just before the summit to enjoy the magnificent views. We ventured on, expecting to hit the summit and then start descending. However, the road petered out, leaving us to drive on a stony track – well, if that was a track our garden path is a motorway! The track continued to climb along a narrow ridge with steep valleys to our left and right. We decided to soldier on, since a road was clearly marked on the map and on the sat nav – it surely couldn’t continue as a track all the way back to Ezcaray? How wrong we were! We must have been well over 7,000 feet, with darkness descending and the mist closing in, when common sense prevailed and we had to turn back. At least we knew what was behind us, we had no idea what lay ahead. The views were spectacular; it seemed as if we were on top of the world with clouds below us and mountain tops rising like islands in a sea of mist. The sunset was amazing, but we were in no fit state to enjoy any of these sights as we had visions of having to camp out on the mountain overnight. However, we slowly made our way back to the surfaced road and eventually got back to our hotel. It was an amazing experience, but one that we are not too eager to repeat under those circumstances. Although, we would like to return to find out just how far that track continued but make sure that it was much earlier in the day, when there were plenty of hours of daylight for us to see where we were going and to enjoy the scenery.

We were not quite so adventurous the following day. We drove up to the Puero de Piqueras, (a mere 5,600feet high) between Soria and Logrono, before returning along the valley of the dinosaurs, the Ruta del Leza-Jubera. Again a day full of breathtaking views.  Everyone enjoyed a relaxing day on the Sunday, before heading back to Santader and home on the Monday. We never realised how picturesque Spain is, having only experienced the Costas in the past, but we shall certainly be returning to enjoy more of this wonderful country. Thanks to Dave & Kay for organising such an exciting holiday.

The noggin at The Barn was well attended, considering there were just as many of us in Spain. The noggin at Usk was also very well attended.

The last Sunday of the month was Paul and Lesley’s house warming. Twenty cars met at Bassaleg for a short run through the country lanes around Rudry before heading for the Cwmcarn Forest Drive. The weather had not been good at the start, although Gary and Kath, Keith & Ronnie, Denis & Liz and Dave & Kay braved the weather with hoods down. Dave & Kay even had side screens off and aeros on – what dedication! The rain had cleared by lunch time as we arrived at Paul & Lesley’s home in Newport, where Chris & Helen, Keith & Brenda, Dave & Linda and George joined the party. We thoroughly enjoyed the lunch that Lesley had prepared for us and wish them both well on their return to the fold. Thank you both for your hospitality.

Taffmog car badges in royal ivory, blue, red and green are now available at a cost of £35 plus postage and packing. Please contact me if you are interested.

Reminder - nominations for a charity to benefit from our Christmas raffle must be with me in writing before the AGM. Also items for the AGM agenda and nominations for officers.

Our Christmas Weekend at The Cliff Hotel in Gwbert should be well under way by the time this Miscellany drops on your doorstep – the final event in a very busy and successful Taffmog year. So all that remains is to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous new year. Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda i bawb.
